B:CIVIC Founding Member Level 3 Communications sets an example in Colorado and across the country with its community involvement efforts. Through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) program, Level 3 Cares, the company strives to connect its volunteers to an organization that meets their volunteer expectations, while ensuring their valuable time L3supports local communities in creative and rewarding ways.

Level 3 strongly encourages teams to volunteer together as a way to strengthen team camaraderie and foster a culture of giving back. One of Level 3’s signature volunteer programs, Everyone Deserves a Cookie, was designed to fill a gap identified by the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless. Level 3 volunteers go into their kitchen and personally make desserts the shelter’s guests can enjoy that evening. Since the launch of this program in May, Level 3 has sent nine small groups to volunteer their time and bake cookies, serving approximately 1,800 people.

This program not only provides a bit of home-baked goodness to the shelter’s guests, but also provides Level 3 volunteers a tangible way to do good.

Join us for SPARKS and SIPS on January 27



SPARKS and SIPS is a quarterly B:CIVIC event designed to spark ideas through a 60-90 minute workshop followed by happy hour sipping and networking with other cool companies. You can choose to attend both the workshop and the networking – or just one or the other. The interactive SPARKS workshops are designed to address hot community involvement and corporate philanthropy topics, highlight member activities and tips, offer opportunities for discussion and best practice sharing, and provide actionable information that can spark new ideas about how your company can take its community involvement to the next level right away.

The inaugural SPARKS AND SIPS is The Power of Purpose. As we start 2015, it is a great time to clarify or revisit the true motivations your company has for giving back and being engaged in the community. Is the feel good of giving back for employee engagement your main goal? Building a stronger reputation in the community? Customer retention or exposure to new potential markets? Or…? Maybe it’s a combo of several drivers.

Too often companies jump straight into doing “stuff,” with no strategy or clear sense of why they choose one cause over another or which community organization to support. While you may hit the jackpot with a great experience, many times the effort and other resources you put in may not bear the desired fruit. A key contributor to not having the impact you wanted may be that the giving strategies chosen don’t align with the company’s actual underlying motivations and purpose(s). Maybe you’re focusing on what you think is a “politically correct” purpose by focusing solely on community benefits instead of acknowledging you can do double duty so both your company and the community benefit. The workshop is co-presented by B:CIVIC and Community Shares of Colorado and will help you clarify the true motivations your company has for being involved in Colorado communities. You will gain insights on how to better plan and focus your efforts to do a lot of good AND be in alignment with your purpose. Once you truly identify your company’s purpose, you can create much more powerful win-win strategies and programs to implement.

Study: Corporate Citizenship Delivers Real Results

The Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship recently released a study on the impact of companies investing in environmental and social programs, delivering optimistic results for the corporate giving professional. According to the data, employee volunteering, sustainability and corporate giving programs help contribute to important business goals in addition to social good.

For the first time in more than a decade, executives predict that investment will increase over the next three years for every dimension of corporate citizenship. In addition, the majority believe that corporate citizenship:

  • contributes to company success
  • returns value to shareholders and
  • merits additional investments.

B:CIVIC – Our Mission, Members and Opportunities

IMG_0144Welcome to For Goodness’ Sake, B:CIVIC’s blog that will offer new perspectives on business giving in Colorado. We’ll regularly serve up philanthropy and community outreach ideas, new ways your business can get involved and noticed for its good deeds, insights on Colorado’s business giving scene and updates on our organization.

As the spin-off of the 2% Club, Businesses Committed to Investing and Volunteering in the Community (B:CIVIC) was established to boost business philanthropy and community involvement across the state.

Simply put: we know that businesses doing good make communities great.

We might be new, but many of our Founding Board Members have given back to their communities for decades. The 14 businesses and organizations at the helm of B:CIVIC are leaders in business giving in Colorado, and they’re on a mission to help companies of all sizes and industries do the same. We’ve almost reached 100 Founding Members and are ready to get the good going.

So, What’s Next?

Starting in 2015, we will offer year-round, exclusive professional development opportunities, educational resources, networking events, service days and much more. Whether you prefer attending an engaging panel that discusses the best business philanthropy practices or picking the brain of a fellow business leader about their latest community outreach tactics at a hopping cocktail hour, we have you covered. Stay tuned for a formal calendar of member events, as well as opportunities for Colorado’s nonprofit community and the general public to get involved.

We also invite our members to get involved with B:CIVIC by joining one of the following committees:

  • Membership: Get involved with recruiting the best and brightest businesses that are committed to their local communities.
  • Outreach and Marketing: Help tell B:CIVIC’s story, establish beneficial community partnerships, elevate members in the public eye, drive chatter on social media and much more.
  • Program: Guide the design and implementation of program activities, evaluate program effectiveness and ensure that the programing addresses the needs of the organization.

Xcel Invites Its Customers to Volunteer With Employees

Xcel servcie logoA recent trend in company volunteering is to plan service projects and invite not just employees, but also customers and the community at large to participate.  Xcel Energy sent out the email below to its customers this week inviting participation in the September 6th Day of Service that they are sponsoring with CBS4 and Serve Colorado.  This is a great way to partner and raise visibility for all three organizations while doing projects to make a difference in the community.  It’s also a great way to engage with customers and strengthen reputation and loyalty.

Saturday, September 6, 2014 will be Xcel Energy’s 4th annual Day of Service. We are partnering with Serve Colorado and CBS4 in honoring the anniversary of 9/11 by supporting our communities with over 2,000 volunteers who will be volunteering at almost 60 sites.  And you are invited to join us!

Our projects are listed below – find one that interests you and come join us!  There’s something for everyone.  You can click on any individual project for additional event details.  Projects are filling up quickly, so if your first choice is full, please consider others that still need volunteers.  And be sure to watch CBS Channel 4 for project highlights and event information.

Most projects will run from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  If start or end time is different, time will be listed with the event.
