Since moving into the Colorado Collaborative for Nonprofits alongside several great organizations like Community Shares of Colorado, B:CIVIC is proud to support Community Shares and their community impact efforts.
At Community Shares, we are proud of our ethical practices and are thrilled to receive the inaugural Bill Daniels Ethical Leadership Award, presented by Colorado Nonprofit Association at the Colorado Nonprofit Week Awards Luncheon on March 16th. We strive to maintain the highest standards of excellence in the transparency of our finances, donor privacy, and organizational integrity. Receiving this award reflect our ongoing commitment to ethical practices in our everyday operations.
As Erin Atwell, our CEO, shared in her speech:
“All of us know the impact nonprofit organizations make in our world. We set an example of how to use dollars wisely, how to care for others, and most importantly, how to build respectful and inclusive communities accountable to a greater good.
We set this example through our everyday behavior. Ethical leadership is not an unreachable horizon, but rather a foundation built by hundreds of small decisions we make every single day to do the right thing. It will take all of us actively living out this commitment to our core values to answer this call to excellence and to create change.”

In 1986, 12 Colorado nonprofits joined together to change the face of workplace giving. Originally called The Alternative Fund, our organization gave a home to nonprofit organizations that did not fit the mold of existing workplace giving federations. Our members included grassroots nonprofits and new issue areas such as social justice, respect for all individuals, environmental conservation, and community-owned arts. Soon after, our founders chose the name “Community Shares of Colorado” and began actively working to expand charitable choice in workplace giving campaigns.
Community Shares’ first workplace giving campaign raised $3,500 dollars. Community Shares reached its first million dollar campaign in 2002. In 2017, Community Shares will manage more than $3.6 million in philanthropic funds. Learn more.
