Welcome to For Goodness’ Sake, B:CIVIC’s blog that will offer new perspectives on business giving in Colorado. We’ll regularly serve up philanthropy and community outreach ideas, new ways your business can get involved and noticed for its good deeds, insights on Colorado’s business giving scene and updates on our organization.
As the spin-off of the 2% Club, Businesses Committed to Investing and Volunteering in the Community (B:CIVIC) was established to boost business philanthropy and community involvement across the state.
Simply put: we know that businesses doing good make communities great.
We might be new, but many of our Founding Board Members have given back to their communities for decades. The 14 businesses and organizations at the helm of B:CIVIC are leaders in business giving in Colorado, and they’re on a mission to help companies of all sizes and industries do the same. We’ve almost reached 100 Founding Members and are ready to get the good going.
So, What’s Next?
Starting in 2015, we will offer year-round, exclusive professional development opportunities, educational resources, networking events, service days and much more. Whether you prefer attending an engaging panel that discusses the best business philanthropy practices or picking the brain of a fellow business leader about their latest community outreach tactics at a hopping cocktail hour, we have you covered. Stay tuned for a formal calendar of member events, as well as opportunities for Colorado’s nonprofit community and the general public to get involved.
We also invite our members to get involved with B:CIVIC by joining one of the following committees:
- Membership: Get involved with recruiting the best and brightest businesses that are committed to their local communities.
- Outreach and Marketing: Help tell B:CIVIC’s story, establish beneficial community partnerships, elevate members in the public eye, drive chatter on social media and much more.
- Program: Guide the design and implementation of program activities, evaluate program effectiveness and ensure that the programing addresses the needs of the organization.
B:CIVIC kicked off on November 18th with a party at Will Call in RiNo. More than 100 representatives of local business showed up to support B:CIVIC’s mission to promote business philanthropy and community involvement in the community. Check out the album here!
A recent trend in company volunteering is to plan service projects and invite not just employees, but also customers and the community at large to participate. Xcel Energy sent out the email below to its customers this week inviting participation in the September 6th Day of Service that they are sponsoring with CBS4 and Serve Colorado. This is a great way to partner and raise visibility for all three organizations while doing projects to make a difference in the community. It’s also a great way to engage with customers and strengthen reputation and loyalty.

Saturday, September 6, 2014 will be Xcel Energy’s 4th annual Day of Service. We are partnering with Serve Colorado and CBS4 in honoring the anniversary of 9/11 by supporting our communities with over 2,000 volunteers who will be volunteering at almost 60 sites. And you are invited to join us!
Our projects are listed below – find one that interests you and come join us! There’s something for everyone. You can click on any individual project for additional event details. Projects are filling up quickly, so if your first choice is full, please consider others that still need volunteers. And be sure to watch CBS Channel 4 for project highlights and event information.
Most projects will run from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. If start or end time is different, time will be listed with the event.

The Civic 50, an initiative of Points of Light, in partnership with Bloomberg LP, honors the 50 most community-minded companies in the nation each year as determined by an annual survey.
Benchmarking and sharing the best practices of community engagement offers companies that participate in The Civic 50 a roadmap for using their time, skills, and other resources to improve the quality of life in the communities where they do business.
Survey opens Monday, June 2nd and closes on Friday, August 15, 2014. Companies with annual revenue of $1 billion or more are eligible for consideration.
For example, in 2013, the top 5 companies based on organizational commitment which measured the scope of a company’s community engagement program, broad-based employee involvement, community investment, advocacy and leadership were:.
1. Morgan Stanley
2. Capital One
3. Bank of America
4. Apollo Education Group.
