B:CIVIC launched its first ever Summit on September 29, 2016, attracting the state’s brightest Corporate Social Responsibility professionals to build the community of corporate philanthropy and CSR professionals. Focused on “Sparking Collaboration and Igniting Impact,” the Summit began with a Welcome from Governor Hickenlooper who also proclaimed it to be B:CIVIC Day throughout Colorado.

The Summit was created to shine a light on the importance of CSR, explore the business imperative of corporate philanthropy and employee community engagement, provide concrete guidance on best practices, and create connections among attendees that would propel their work and the field of CSR.

National speakers included:
Diane Solinger, Global Director, GooglersGive;
Gayle Jennings-O’Byrne, CEO, The Prometheus Exchange and former VP, JPMorgan Chase Global Philanthropy;
Kimberly Davis, Senior Managing Director, Teneo Holdings and former President, JPMorgan Chase Foundation; and
Steve Rochlin, Co-CEO, IO Sustainability and Creator, Project ROI.

Workshops included:

  • “Corporate Philanthropy Continuum: Funding and Program Models,” presented by Kate Lyda and Kelly Purdy of the Denver Foundation; and Roz Elliott, Vice President, Investor Relations and Corporate Communications for DCP Midstream;
  • “Stakeholder Mapping for CSR: Identifying Targets and Aligning with the Community” presented by Lisha Burnett of Suncor Energy;
  • “Project ROI: Defining the Competitive and Financial Advantages of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability,” presented by Steve Rochlin of IO Sustainability;
  • “How to Make Collaboration Create Amazing Success,” drew upon experiences from “the House that Beer Built” and the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. Panelists included Susan Boehnke of Janus, Brue Erley of Creative Strategies Group, Kailey Schumacher of Odell Brewing and Carol Cochran of Horse and Dragon Brewing.

Five inspirational speakers gave “Lightning Talks” depicting their personal journeys that led them to a commitment to giving back and developing a philanthropic aspect of their work. In less than seven minutes each, the speakers had the audience inspired, laughing, nodding heads and engaged in motivation. Speakers included Mike Hess, Blind Institute of Technology; Jamie Van Leeuwen, Global Livingston Institute and Senior Policy Advisor to Governor Hickenlooper; Nicole Glaros, TechStars; Brook Eddy, Bhakti Chai and Mike Stemple of Inspirer.

In conjunction with lunch, attendees were invited to select and attend two facilitated small group “Huddles,” allowing participants to exchange ideas and explore best practices. More than a dozen 30- minute Huddle sessions were held covering topics such as “Making the Business Case for CSR,” “Developing and Maintaining Strategic Partnerships” and “Making the Most of Skilled-Based Volunteers.” Huddle facilitators* were CSR professionals from 18 metro-Denver companies and organizations.

The reception afterward gave attendees an opportunity to network and reflect on the day. Special thanks to Bhakti Chai, O’Dell Brewing and Horse and Dragon Brewing for providing beverages.

Generous support was given by Title Sponsors Rally for Impact and Suncor Energy, along with Supporting Sponsors First Western Trust, Janus Capital Group and Western Union. In-Kind Sponsors included Yellow Dog Printing & Graphics; Karen Pacyga Web Design; and jaedesign.  All of the Summit speakers, workshop presenters and facilitators generously donated their time and expertise.
